Description

Eighth doubled die obverse cataloged by the Wexler Team for the 2004 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial Cent, WDDO-008 targets multiple design zones with extra thickness across LIBERTY, the date, and the lower hair and beard. Notches appear on the lower left of T and Y in LIBERTY and on the upper left of T, creating a serrated effect where primary and secondary impressions overlap with slight offset. These notched edges provide accessible visual diagnostics, as the stepped letter forms are identifiable under moderate magnification. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 2004 1-cent WDDO-008, no additional cross-references are known. The extra thickness across LIBERTY indicates hub displacement added secondary raised metal to the entire word, while hair and beard doubling extends the anomaly into the portrait's fine detail. The date doubling provides a third attribution zone separate from the motto and portrait elements. The Lincoln Memorial obverse, unchanged since Brenner's 1909 design, carries incuse lettering where hub displacement creates measurable thickening visible as broadened strokes and stepped contours. Die Markers: Obverse: A die gouge (dot) shows well below and between the two zeros in the date. A die gouge can be found between the B and E of LIBERTY. Reverse: A die gouge can be found pretty well centered in the D of UNITED. Another die gouge shows to the left of the bottom of the second U in PLURIBUS. A die gouge (dot) can be found inside the top of the N of ONE at the angle. A die scratch runs southwest from near the top of the second Memorial column.
