2002 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
Submitted by Billy G. Crawford and cross-referenced as Crawford CDDO-002, the 2002 Lincoln Memorial Cent WDDO-001 exhibits an extra strand of hair visible in Lincoln’s neck area from a spread to the east — a directional hub displacement that created a secondary impression of the hair detail shifted eastward from the primary, producing what appears as an additional hair strand in the neck region of the portrait. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge between the E and R of LIBERTY, a die gouge below the right side of the first zero in the date, a die gouge on the front tip of the lower bust, and a die gouge west-southwest of the lips. The reverse is also documented as a doubled die, listed in the Wexler files as 2002 1¢ WDDR-030, making this another dual-doubled-die marriage where both obverse and reverse working dies carry independent hub doubling features. This dual nature significantly enhances the variety’s attribution interest, as collectors can document two separate hubbing anomalies on a single coin. The Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 2002 in copper-plated zinc composition (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.5 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. Frank Gasparro designed the Memorial reverse, and Victor David Brenner designed the obverse portrait. The extra hair strand in the neck area is a portrait-focused doubling feature that requires examination under magnification with oblique lighting to resolve the secondary strand against the primary hair detail. Crawford’s CDDO-002 cross-reference connects this variety to his independent doubled die catalog, providing an alternative attribution pathway for collectors using either the Wexler or Crawford reference systems.
