Description

Fifth documented reverse rim cud on the 2002 Philadelphia Mint Indiana State Quarter, CU-25c-2002P-05R(IN) extends the catalog of die rim failures on this State Quarters program issue. A rim cud forms when a piece of the die rim breaks away entirely, leaving a cavity that fills with metal during striking and creates a raised featureless mass at the coin's edge. The "R" confirms the fracture occurred on the reverse die bearing the Indiana design — the race car, state outline, 19 stars, and "Crossroads of America" motto. Five reverse rim cuds for a single State Quarter is a substantial count, indicating either that the Indiana reverse die created stress concentrations at the rim, that production volumes consumed many die pairs, or that collectors examined these coins with particular thoroughness. The 50 State Quarters program (1999-2008) released five new designs each year, and the rapid succession of new reverses meant each state's coins received concentrated attention during their release year. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, this fifth entry demonstrates ongoing rim failures across multiple die pairs.
