CU-25c-2002P-02(IN) Rim Cud

Description

Second documented rim cud for the 2002 Philadelphia Mint Indiana State Quarter, CU-25c-2002P-02(IN) preserves a die fracture on the reverse of a coin bearing the Crossroads of America design — Indiana's reverse features a race car, the state outline, and 19 stars representing Indiana's admission as the nineteenth state. A rim cud forms when a section of the die rim breaks away completely, and the resulting cavity fills with metal during each subsequent strike to produce a raised, shapeless mass at the coin's edge. Indiana was one of five states honored in 2002, alongside Tennessee, Ohio, Louisiana, and Mississippi, continuing the program's march through states in order of ratification or admission. The Philadelphia Mint produced hundreds of millions of each State Quarter design annually, and the sheer volume of dies consumed during each design's production window created opportunities for rim fractures. Two documented cuds on the 2002-P Indiana issue — CU-25c-2002P-02(IN) and CU-25c-2002P-04(IN) — indicate at least two dies developed rim breaks during the Philadelphia production run.
