2002D-1DER-002WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

Designated 2002D-1DER-002WS in the Trail Dies catalog, this trail die reverse variety was struck at the Denver Mint on a 2002 Lincoln Memorial Cent. Trail die varieties occur when residual design impressions from a previously used die transfer onto a new working die during manufacturing, leaving faint ghost images from an unrelated design. This specimen is documented at Stage C, indicating both obverse and reverse are in Late Die State. Specific die markers include die dots scattered around the U of UNITED and additional die dots positioned to the left of and one below the S of PLURIBUS. These dot-pattern markers are characteristic of late die state pitting, where small fragments of die steel fracture under repeated striking pressure. The Lincoln Memorial Cent reverse, designed by Frank Gasparro and introduced in 1959, features detailed architectural elements that provide numerous reference points for identifying trail die impressions against intended relief.
