2002-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as Coppercoins 2002D-1DR-001, this 2002 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent shows a nice spread to the west on the left side of E PLURIBUS UNUM and the left dots flanking the motto. The westward spread creates a shelf effect on the left edges of the affected letters and dots, most visible under magnification at a slight angle. Obverse die markers include a die gouge south of the first 2 in the date. On the reverse, a die gouge appears to the left of the lower U in UNITED, another to the left of the lower L in PLURIBUS, and a third above the upper left dot. Die pitting is present above the end of the left Memorial base, and a die gouge sits in the upper first bay of the Memorial structure. The concentration of reverse die markers around the UNITED and PLURIBUS areas makes attribution straightforward once the primary doubling on EPU and the left dots has been confirmed. Struck in copper-plated zinc at Denver, the 2002-D Memorial Cent continued the high-mintage production typical of early 2000s cent coinage.
