Description

Before a cud fully develops, the die announces its impending failure through a crack that reaches the rim — a precursor stage known as a pre-cud. PC-25c-2001P-02R(KY) records the second cataloged reverse pre-cud on the 2001-P Kentucky State Quarter struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Kentucky was the fifteenth state honored in the 50 State Quarters Program, released in 2001 alongside New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The reverse design by T. James Ferrell depicts a thoroughbred horse behind a fence with the inscription "My Old Kentucky Home." A pre-cud crack reaching the rim indicates the die was approaching the point where metal displacement would begin — continued use would have produced a retained or full cud as the rim fragment weakened further. The "R" suffix confirms this crack appeared on the state-specific reverse die rather than the common obverse bearing Washington's portrait.
