2001D-1DER-003T Trail Die Reverse
Error
Description
Catalogued as a major trail die, 2001D-1DER-003T on the 2001-D Lincoln Memorial Cent is a multi-directional trail die reverse with three distinct sets of lines at separate angles. The first set, offset at 050 degrees, produces lines from the tops of the Memorial steps. The second set, at 150 degrees, generates lines from the bottoms of the Memorial lettering. The third set runs more vertically. This three-directional trail impression is the defining characteristic that elevates the variety to major status within the Trail Dies catalogue. The obverse is in Very Late Die State, with small die gouges in and around the date. Found by Jeremy Gardner. Trail die errors result when a die is used beyond its intended purpose, transferring ghost-like lines across the field. The simultaneous presence of three offset directions is uncommon — most trail die listings show a single set. The multi-directional geometry of 2001D-1DER-003T makes it one of the more complex trail die attributions for the Lincoln Memorial Cent in the Trail Dies reference.
