Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2001-D 25-cent KY WDDO-002, this doubled die obverse variety appears on the 2001-D Kentucky State Quarter. The 50 State Quarters program (1999-2008) struck five state-themed reverse designs each year in cupronickel-clad composition at 5.67 grams and 24.3 mm diameter. Kentucky, the 15th state admitted to the Union in 1792, features a reverse design by T. James Ferrell depicting the Federal Hill mansion with a thoroughbred racehorse behind a fence and the inscription "My Old Kentucky Home." The DDO variety was created during the die hubbing process when a slight misalignment between hub impressions transferred doubling onto the obverse design elements bearing John Flanagan's Washington portrait.
