Description

Second cataloged spiked head for the 2000-P Massachusetts State Quarter, SKH-25c-2000P-02(MA) originates from a different die pair than SKH-25c-2000P-01(MA). Two documented spiked heads for a single State Quarter date-mint indicates that at least two obverse dies developed surface damage near Washington's portrait during Massachusetts quarter production at Philadelphia. Each die's gouge created a spike with its own angle and projection, and distinguishing between them requires comparison against reference photographs mapping the geometry relative to Washington's hair or bust. The Massachusetts Minute Man reverse was among the most popular designs in the program's early years, maintaining collector interest that extended to die variety searches. State Quarter spiked heads occupy an accessible entry point for beginning variety collectors — the large quarter format makes raised projections easier to spot than on smaller denominations, and the program's familiarity provides immediate context for any anomaly found. Copper-nickel clad composition. Cataloged and verified by Cuds on Coins.
