First cataloged spiked head on the 2000-P Massachusetts State Quarter, SKH-25c-2000P-01(MA) documents a die gouge near Washington's portrait on one of the earliest issues in the 50 State Quarters Program. Massachusetts was the sixth state honored, released in 2000 alongside Virginia, Maryland, South Carolina, and New Hampshire. The reverse features the Minute Man statue at Concord, commemorating the colony's role in the American Revolution, while the obverse carries the modified John Flanagan portrait used across all fifty designs. Spiked heads on State Quarters attracted considerable attention during the program's peak years, when an estimated 140 million Americans were actively collecting designs from circulation.
