Description

First doubled die obverse cataloged for the 1999-S Proof Pennsylvania State Quarter, DDO-001 displays an extra strong spread to the east on LIBERTY, QUARTER, UNITED STATES, and slightly on Washington's profile. VarietyVista assigns UVC-2012 and DMR-003. The eastward spread — a Class I rotated hub doubling where the secondary impression shifts in a single direction — is described as extra strong, placing this among the more dramatic doubled dies in the State Quarter series. The doubling appears on multiple elements: LIBERTY, QUARTER DOLLAR, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the profile itself, indicating significant hub displacement across virtually the entire obverse. Pennsylvania was the first state honored in the 50 State Quarters Program, launched in 1999. The reverse, designed by John Mercanti, depicts the Commonwealth statue, an outline of the state, the motto "Virtue, Liberty, Independence," and a keystone.
