A pre-cud variety on the 1999 Connecticut State Quarter from the Philadelphia Mint, the PC-25c-1999P-01(CT) captures a die in the stage immediately preceding cud formation — an advanced crack has reached the rim and begun to outline a section of die steel that will eventually fracture and detach, but the fragment has not yet broken free. Pre-cuds show the fully formed crack network that defines the future cud's boundaries, creating a distinctive raised line on struck coins that traces the path where the die will eventually fail. The Connecticut quarter, the fifth coin in the State Quarters series, features a reverse design by T. James Ferrell depicting the Charter Oak, and this pre-cud documents die deterioration specific to the geometry of that design and the Washington obverse.
