Description

Designated 1998D-1DER-003T by the Trail Dies reference, this trail die reverse variety was struck at the Denver Mint on a 1998 Lincoln Memorial cent composed of copper-plated zinc, weighing 2.5 grams with a 19 mm diameter. Trail die varieties represent a distinct class of die error where a working die contacts another die or hub component outside of normal striking operations, transferring faint ghost-like impressions that appear on subsequently struck coins. This specimen is documented at mid die state, with the obverse showing a small die dot on the left edge of Lincoln's collar as the primary authentication marker. The reverse diagnostic is a die gouge visible over the shrubs on the left side of the Memorial building, a location on Frank Gasparro's reverse design where such marks are relatively easy to spot.
