1998-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Among the more distinctive Lincoln Memorial cent doubled dies of the late 1990s, the 1998-D WDDR-001 exhibits a tilted extra roof line visible at the top of the sixth Memorial bay on the reverse. This variety is classified as CONECA 3-R-VIII and carries the Wexler designation 1998-D 1¢ WDDR-001. Authentication is aided by several clear die markers scattered across both sides of the coin. On the obverse, a small die gouge sits at the top right of the 8 in the date, offering a reliable pickup point for cherrypickers sorting through rolls. The reverse carries additional diagnostics: a short die gouge runs westward from the lower fourth column, while two separate die gouges appear near the inscription CENT, one positioned to the left of center on the C and another to the right of center on the T. Denver Mint cents of this era were struck in enormous quantities, making doubled die varieties from this facility especially prized when located. Collectors should examine the sixth bay area under moderate magnification to confirm the extra roof line before relying on die markers alone for attribution.
