Description

First pre-cud variety documented on the 1997 Philadelphia Washington Quarter, cataloged by Cuds on Coins as PC-25c-1997P-01. This coin was struck from a die in the early stages of rim failure — internal cracks had developed within the die steel but had not yet caused a section of the rim to break free and create the characteristic retained cud. The die was either removed from production or continued in service until full failure, but this coin captures the transitional moment when the crack was active but the die still structurally intact. Pre-cuds on Washington Quarters appear across many dates because heavy production volumes meant dies were frequently pushed to their limits, increasing the probability of capturing intermediate failure stages. The 1997-P was among the final years of the standard heraldic eagle reverse before the 50 State Quarters Program launched in 1999, transforming the quarter into America's most varied circulating denomination. Flanagan's Washington portrait was in its sixty-sixth year, struck on copper-nickel clad at 24.3mm. Inspect for a raised die crack near the rim indicating the internal fracture path of this pre-cud variety.
