About This Coin
The 1997 Franklin D. Roosevelt Commemorative Five Dollar Gold is a United States commemorative dollar. Authorized to honor the 32nd President, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who led the nation through the Great Depression and World War II. Roosevelt served an unprecedented four terms from 1933 to 1945 and is the only president to appear on a circulating U.S. coin during his lifetime (the 1946 Roosevelt dime was issued after his death). The obverse features a portrait of President Roosevelt reviewing the U.S. fleet, based on one of Roosevelt's favorite photographs showing the Commander-in-Chief at San Francisco Bay, while the reverse displays the Presidential Seal as it appeared at FDR's 1933 inauguration. Designed by T. James Ferrell/James Peed. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 8.36 grams, 21.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. The FDR $5 gold is the only gold commemorative solely dedicated to Roosevelt, and its fleet-reviewing portrait offers a unique view of the wartime president.
