Description
The 1997 (W) Franklin D. Roosevelt Commemorative Five Dollar Gold is a commemorative dollar struck at the West Point Mint. With a mintage of 11,894, this is a scarce commemorative issue. Authorized to honor the 32nd President, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who led the nation through the Great Depression and World War II. The obverse features a portrait of President Roosevelt reviewing the U.S. fleet, based on one of Roosevelt's favorite photographs showing the Commander-in-Chief at San Francisco Bay, while the reverse displays the Presidential Seal as it appeared at FDR's 1933 inauguration. Designed by T. James Ferrell/James Peed. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 8.36 grams, 21.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9748. The FDR $5 gold is the only gold commemorative solely dedicated to Roosevelt, and its fleet-reviewing portrait offers a unique view of the wartime president.
