About This Coin

The 1986 Statue of Liberty Centennial Commemorative Five Dollar Gold is a United States commemorative dollar. The gold coin in the 1986 Statue of Liberty three-coin program, this $5 piece features an intimate close-up portrait of Lady Liberty's face. The program was authorized by Congress (Public Law 99-61) to raise funds for the restoration of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The obverse features a close-up view of the face and crown of the Statue of Liberty, with rays seemingly beaming beyond the coin's edge, while the reverse displays an eagle with wings upraised, about to land. Designed by Elizabeth Jones. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 8.36 grams, 21.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. The Statue of Liberty $5 gold is popular among collectors for its striking close-up design and remains one of the most recognizable modern commemorative gold issues.
