Description
The 1986 (W) Proof Statue of Liberty Centennial Commemorative Five Dollar Gold is a proof commemorative dollar struck at the West Point Mint. The U.S. Mint produced 404,013 examples. The gold coin in the 1986 Statue of Liberty three-coin program, this $5 piece features an intimate close-up portrait of Lady Liberty's face. The obverse features a close-up view of the face and crown of the Statue of Liberty, with rays seemingly beaming beyond the coin's edge, while the reverse displays an eagle with wings upraised, about to land. Designed by Elizabeth Jones. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 8.36 grams, 21.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9623. The Statue of Liberty $5 gold is popular among collectors for its striking close-up design and remains one of the most recognizable modern commemorative gold issues.
