Description

Very close clockwise spread from a pivot at approximately 3:00 on the die face distinguishes the 1996 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial Cent WDDO-002, with doubling showing on the lower letters of LIBERTY. The pivot point at 3:00 means the rotational displacement radiates outward from the right side of the die, concentrating the visible spread on design elements furthest from that axis — which places LIBERTY in the primary diagnostic zone. Attributed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as Wexler 1996 1-cent WDDO-002, this variety carries several obverse die markers: a small die gouge above the left side of the B in LIBERTY, a die gouge north of the E in LIBERTY, and a die gouge appearing as a dot inside the first nine of the date. No reverse die markers were noted. The very close classification means the secondary image sits tightly against the primary, requiring magnification and proper lighting angle to resolve the separation between the two impressions on LIBERTY's lower serifs. Die markers clustered around the LIBERTY area conveniently overlap with the doubling zone, allowing collectors to confirm both the correct die and the variety attribution in the same field of view.
