Description

Presenting light trail lines from the BER of LIBERTY at 270 degrees offset (due west), this 1995 Philadelphia Memorial Cent shows a lateral die shift during striking. Stage C markers: obverse LDS with none observed; reverse LDS with a die dent next to the rim over the D of UNITED, a small die gouge between the E and S of STATES, and a die scratch from the lower terminus of the last S in STATES. The late die state classification indicates considerable accumulated wear on both faces. Composed of copper-plated zinc at 2.5 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1995-P was produced in substantial quantities at Philadelphia. The localized trail effect on only three letters of LIBERTY (BER) suggests the lateral die movement was subtle, leaving detectable traces only on the most prominent design elements in that area where the die surface displacement was greatest during the brief contact event.

Die Markers

  • Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – none observed.
  • Reverse is LDS – die dent, next to the rim, over the D of UNITED. Small die gouge is seen in between the E and S of STATES. Die scratch from the lower terminus of the last S in STATES.
