1995 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004
Error
Description
Documented by the Wexler Team with Variety ID 1995 1c WDDO-004, this Lincoln Memorial cent exhibits an extremely close Class II (Distorted Hub) spread towards the center on the right side of the date, with a distinctive notch on the lower left of the numeral one, and on the left side of LIBER in LIBERTY. The 1995 date is particularly famous in Lincoln cent variety collecting due to the dramatic 1995 Doubled Die Obverse (WDDO-001/FS-101), which received widespread media attention and introduced many people to variety collecting. This WDDO-004 variety, while more subtle than the headline variety, is nonetheless a legitimate and attributable doubled die with its own diagnostic characteristics. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge dot southeast of the R in TRUST and another die gouge dot well east of Lincoln's nose and inward from the rim at approximately the 2 o'clock position. The reverse shows a die gouge south from the bottom of the steps below the right post of the Memorial. No other cross-references are currently known for this variety. The 1995 cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint on a copper-plated zinc planchet weighing 2.5 grams with a 19 mm diameter. The Lincoln Memorial Cents 1959-2008 series produced an enormous number of doubled die varieties, but the 1995 date holds a special place for its role in popularizing variety collecting among mainstream numismatists.
