1995 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-003
Error
Description
Showing light southward spread that creates the appearance of an extra earlobe on Lincoln's portrait, DDO-003 on the 1995-P Lincoln Memorial Cent echoes the diagnostic hallmark of the famous 1995 DDO-001 — one of the most celebrated modern error coins in numismatics. The extra earlobe effect occurs when hub doubling displaces Lincoln's ear detail slightly, producing a visible secondary lobe below or adjacent to the primary ear. While DDO-001 commands substantial premiums for its strong doubling, DDO-003's light spread produces a more subtle version of the same visual phenomenon. Die markers UVC-3483 and DMR-008 fingerprint this working die and distinguish it from DDO-001 and other 1995-P doubled die varieties. The 1995 cent was struck in the copper-plated zinc composition (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper plating) adopted in 1982, with Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse. Collectors familiar with the 1995 DDO-001's extra earlobe should approach DDO-003 with similar technique: examine Lincoln's ear under 5x to 10x magnification with angled lighting to detect the secondary lobe created by the southward hub displacement.
