1995D-1DER-005WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

Trail dies produce a distinctive form of die deterioration doubling where the design elements appear to leave faint "trails" or extensions beyond their intended boundaries, caused by progressive die wear rather than a hubbing error. This fifth documented trail die reverse for the 1995 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent shows the characteristic trailing effect on the Memorial building's fine architectural detail. Cataloged at Stage B die state, the obverse exhibits mid-die-state markers including a die gouge below the last T of TRUST. The reverse, also at mid-die-state, displays a die crack between the E and R of AMERICA — a progression marker indicating the die had seen substantial use by this stage. Trail dies on Memorial Cents frequently affect the building's columns, steps, and stylobate because the closely spaced vertical elements of Gasparro's design are particularly susceptible to the directional metal flow that creates trailing. The 1995-D cent saw significant production volume at Denver, providing ample opportunity for dies to develop trail die characteristics through extended press runs. Attributed by Trail Dies.
