Description

Second rim cud documented on the 1994 Philadelphia Washington Quarter, representing a major die break where a fragment of the die rim separated entirely, leaving a void that filled with metal during the striking process. The result is a raised, featureless blob of metal at the coin's edge — a hallmark of cud errors that distinguishes them from minor rim clips or die cracks. Philadelphia's 1994 quarter production consumed numerous obverse and reverse dies over the course of the year, and metal fatigue at high-stress rim areas inevitably caused fractures on a subset of working dies. Two cuds from the same date and mint suggest that production conditions — whether related to die steel composition, heat treatment, or striking pressure settings — may have been conducive to rim failure.
