Description

Second retained cud documented for the 1994 Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter, this variety was cataloged by Cuds on Coins on 09/02/2018. A retained cud forms when a section of the die rim cracks and begins to separate but remains partially attached to the die body, continuing to strike coins with the broken fragment still in place. The result is a coin showing a visible crack line near the rim with the design partially preserved in the affected area, distinct from a full cud where the fragment separates entirely and leaves a featureless raised mass. The cross-reference designation RCD-25c-1994P-02 follows the systematic Cuds on Coins nomenclature: RCD for retained cud, 25c for the denomination, 1994P for the date and mint, and -02 indicating the second such variety documented for this issue. The 1994-P Washington Quarter was struck during the later years of the original John Flanagan design that had been in continuous production since 1932, six years before the State Quarter program would introduce rotating reverse designs.
