Description

Sixth documented reverse cud for the 1994 Philadelphia Mint Roosevelt Dime, this variety reflects a high concentration of die rim failures for a single date. Six cuds from one mint and year indicates multiple reverse dies developed rim fractures during the 1994-P production run, likely a consequence of the enormous dime output at Philadelphia during this period. Each cud formed when a section of the die rim broke away entirely, leaving a cavity that filled with metal under striking pressure to produce a raised featureless mass. Cross-referenced as RDC-94P-3R, this entry is maintained in the systematic Roosevelt Dime cud catalog by Cuds on Coins. The Roosevelt Dime has been produced in copper-nickel clad composition since 1965, and the mechanical properties of clad planchets concentrate stress at the rim during high-volume striking. Six documented cuds for a single date demonstrates that die rim failure was a recurring phenomenon within Philadelphia's 1994 dime production, providing variety collectors with multiple examples to pursue.
