Description

Three closely spaced, unabraded die clash events produced this 1994 Roosevelt Dime atypical die clash, generating three distinct sets of clash marks on the coin's surfaces. Whether the three clashes occurred during a single strike due to die chatter or resulted from three separate strikes remains unknown, but the unabraded condition indicates the die was not resurfaced between events — each successive clash added its impression while previous marks remained undisturbed. Standard die clashes occur when obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, transferring incuse impressions of each die's design onto the opposing face. These phantom impressions then appear as raised ghost images on subsequently struck coins. An atypical die clash involves unusual positioning, multiple events, or non-standard contact angles that produce clash marks differing from expected patterns.
