1994P-1DEO-004T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Found by Bill Slaughter, 1994P-1DEO-004T is a Stage C late-to-mid-die-state (LMDS) trail die obverse on the 1994 Philadelphia Lincoln cent with extensive die deterioration across the obverse. Diagonal die scratching covers most of the obverse surface, with the heaviest concentration under the word WE — the result of aggressive die polishing or abrasion that affected a broad swath of the die face. On the reverse, a die clash appears in bay 7, and this clash goes hand in hand with the die abrasions seen on the obverse: the clash event likely prompted the subsequent die polishing that produced the widespread scratching. This causal relationship between the clash and the abrasion makes 004T valuable for understanding Mint die maintenance practices — the die was clashed, polished to remove the clash marks, and returned to service with the polishing scratches still visible.
