1994 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

A very close spread towards the center shows on the lower right R in TRUST as a notch and on the hair details below WE TRUST, giving this 1994 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent doubled die obverse — Wexler Variety ID 1994 1¢ WDDO-002 — a subtle presentation that rewards careful examination under magnification. The die markers on both sides of the coin include features that reflect different aspects of the die's service history. On the obverse, a die gouge (dot) appears on Lincoln's collar well east of the Y in LIBERTY, and a small die gouge (dot) sits just to the left of the top of the I in LIBERTY. The reverse carries a distinctive set of feeder finger scrapes — linear marks left by the mechanical fingers that feed blank planchets into the striking chamber of the coining press. A feeder finger scrape runs southeast from the top of the 1st Memorial column, and additional feeder finger scrapes run from southwest to northeast through the ITE in UNITED. These scrapes are not die manufacture defects but rather contact marks transferred to the die surface during production, and their presence on this die serves as an effective attribution tool. No additional cross-references beyond the Wexler designation are currently known.
