Description

Lincoln's shoulder on the obverse portrait — the curved area below the neck truncation — is a location that rarely draws attention in casual examination but proves to be a reliable die marker host. 1993P-1DER-066WS demonstrates this with two distinct groups of small die gouges on Lincoln's shoulder, forming a paired cluster unusual in its multiplicity: most portrait die markers are solitary features, and two separate groupings in the same anatomical zone create a signature that is both distinctive and hard to confuse with other dies. On the reverse, two die gouges occupy the O in ONE — one on the upper left edge and the other on the interior surface — providing a second paired-marker signature. Both dies are at Stage B in mid-die-state. The shoulder area is structurally interesting from a die-wear perspective: it represents a relatively flat, low-relief portion of the design where the die surface is close to the background plane, making it vulnerable to contact damage but less susceptible to the stress fractures that affect high-relief areas like hair detail or letter strokes.
