Description

Jean Lee's contribution to the 1993-P trail die census, 1993P-1DER-060WS, documents a variety with an unusually complete set of structural observations. The offset direction is 190 degrees. Moderate fluting — line extensions that project beyond the normal boundary of a design feature — enters the stylobate beneath columns 2 and 3, while moderate step deviation appears under columns 5, 6, 7, and 8. The coexistence of fluting and step deviation on the same die is significant: fluting manifests as elongated projections from column bases, while step deviation involves undulation of the steps themselves, and their combined presence indicates the hubbing anomaly affected multiple structural zones. Classified at Stage B in mid-die-state, the obverse carries a small series of die gouges in and around the S of TRUST. On the reverse, a die gouge sits between the letters in OF. The specificity of Lee's documented markers — fluting at columns 2-3, step deviation at 5-8, a cluster on one obverse letter, a gouge between two reverse letters — reflects the position-by-position examination that characterizes thorough trail die research.
