Description

Individual letter surfaces in the reverse legend serve as unexpectedly effective die marker hosts, and 1993P-1DER-056WS demonstrates this with a die dot sitting directly on the first S of STATES. Die dots on letter surfaces are particularly useful because their position can be described with high precision — on a letter rather than in the open field — and because a tiny raised bump perched on the flat face of a letter is immediately apparent under magnification. A small die gouge below the E of CENT provides a complementary reference point on the denomination inscription. Both dies are classified at Stage B in mid-die-state, with no obverse markers noted. The two reverse markers occupy different regions — STATES in the upper legend arc and CENT in the lower denomination line — giving collectors two widely separated reference points unlikely to be confused with each other or with features on similar varieties. In a census containing seventy 1993-P trail die reverses, clear and well-separated marker pairs allow rapid screening by checking two specific locations rather than scanning the entire reverse field.

Die Markers

  • Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – none noted.
  • Reverse is MDS – die dot on the first S of STATES. Small die gouge is seen below the E of CENT.
