Description

Dual-directional trail dies are among the rarest subcategories in the trail die census, and 1993P-1DER-055T — discovered by Patrick Gaughan of Penn — is a textbook example of two independent offset directions coexisting on a single die. The primary trail direction runs at 340 degrees and affects a broad swath of the reverse: strong trail lines from the U of UNITED cross over the adjacent N with enough force to distort it, while the I remains unaffected and TED shows trails and distortion. STATES exhibits lesser but detectable trails across all letters except the final S. Additional 340-degree trails appear on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the upper left Memorial building, and portions of AMERICA. The secondary direction, at 200 degrees, appears exclusively on ONE, where the N and E show displacement along a bearing nearly opposite to the primary — making this a dual-directional trail die. This dual character indicates the die experienced two distinct hubbing anomalies, likely from separate hub impressions during manufacture. Stage B mid-die-state applies to both sides, though a plating bubble issue on the examined obverse coin precludes identifying obverse die markers. The plating bubble — a copper-plating defect where trapped gas creates a raised blister — is unrelated to the die variety but prevented confirming whether markers existed beneath the obscured area.
