Description

Louis Schaeffer of Maryland is the single most prolific contributor to the 1993-P trail die census, with seven credited discoveries across the 044WS-through-070WST range — a body of work reflecting both the depth of his research and the systematic searching required to extract seventy distinct trail die varieties from one date-mint combination. 1993P-1DER-053WS, his first credited variety in this batch, is a Stage B mid-die-state wavy-step trail die showing moderate step deviation under columns 5, 6, and 7, with particular emphasis on the left side of the staircase. This leftward emphasis is worth noting: step deviation does not always distribute evenly, and asymmetric patterns help distinguish one WS variety from another when other markers are ambiguous. Reverse die markers include a die gouge over the left base tip and two small die gouges to the right of the T in CENT. Schaeffer's Maryland base placed him within the mid-Atlantic research community that built much of the trail die catalog through hands-on examination of Philadelphia-minted cent rolls.
