Description
The base line of the Lincoln Memorial — the horizontal feature running beneath the entire colonnade — functions as one of the most useful reverse landmarks for locating die markers. 1993P-1DER-050WS uses it to anchor two identifying features: a pair of small die gouges positioned under the right end of the base line, where the Memorial's foundation meets the flat field approaching the ONE CENT inscription. On the obverse, a small die gouge appears on the lower portion of the G in GOD. Both dies are classified at Stage B in mid-die-state. The base line is effective as a landmark because it is continuous and uninterrupted, spanning nearly the full reverse width — unlike columns or letters, which are discrete elements separated by open field. Damage near the base line is easy to locate under magnification because the eye naturally follows the horizontal line from left to right, and any deviation from the smooth edge draws immediate attention.
