Description

Flow lines — radial streaks created by metal moving outward during striking — are normally associated with the planchet, but when they repeat consistently across multiple coins from the same die, they indicate die surface texture. 1993P-1DER-047WS, a Stage C late-die-state wavy-step trail die, exhibits moderate flow lines around the U of UNITED on the reverse, suggesting the die surface had developed a texture that channeled metal flow in a visible pattern during each strike. On the obverse, a group of die gouges sits between Lincoln's hair and the inscription IN GOD. The hair-to-legend transition zone is a common location for gouges because it represents a sharp elevation change on the die face, where deeply incused portrait detail meets shallower letter impressions — stress concentrations that make the steel vulnerable to surface damage. Both dies had reached late die state, indicating the pair ran together through the final phase of their service without either being individually replaced.
