Description

The decorative urns flanking the Lincoln Memorial staircase are among the smallest architectural features on the cent reverse, yet they serve as surprisingly effective die marker hosts. 1993P-1DER-045WS, a Stage B mid-die-state (MDS) wavy-step trail die, carries a die chip in the left post — the vertical element supporting the left urn at the base of the Memorial steps. This chip is a reliable fingerprint because the urns occupy a discrete area where damage stands out against an otherwise clean background. A die dot positioned to the right of the E in ONE provides a complementary reference point. Together these two markers — one architectural, one typographic — bracket the lower reverse field and give collectors two independent confirmation points. The MDS classification places the coin's production in the middle third of this die's working life, past the initial break-in period but before the advanced deterioration of late die state.
