Description

The highest-numbered entry in the 1993 Philadelphia trail die reverse census, 1993P-1DER-043WS exhibits light step deviation under columns 5, 6, 7, and 8, with emphasis on the left side — indicating the trail line effects were not uniformly distributed but were more pronounced in one direction, consistent with asymmetric force distribution during lateral die slide. On the obverse, an unusual cluster pattern distinguishes this die: three groups of die dots arranged around the Y of LIBERTY. Clustered die dots are uncommon — most dies show isolated individual dots — and three separate clusters around a single letter suggest localized die surface deterioration or concentrated manufacturing defects. The arrangement makes this a particularly strong attribution diagnostic, since the probability of another die developing an identical cluster pattern is extremely low. On the reverse, a heavy die scratch runs from the first T of STATES to the L of PLURIBUS, a long diagonal mark spanning a substantial portion of the reverse die face. This Stage B, mid-die state variety brings the 1993 Philadelphia trail die reverse count to thirteen entries (031 through 043), which combined with thirty Denver Mint reverses and the single Philadelphia obverse yields a 1993 trail die census of at least 44 documented varieties — an exceptional concentration underscoring 1993 as a key date for trail die research.
