Documented at Stage A in early die state (EDS), 1993P-1DER-039WS on the 1993 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent is an unusual entry because trail die effects are overwhelmingly associated with later die states. Most trail die varieties appear in mid-die state or later, when press components have worn sufficiently to allow the lateral die movement that produces trail lines. Finding trail evidence in early die state — before significant wear has accumulated — suggests either that the press had pre-existing alignment issues when this die was installed, or that the die was improperly seated from the start. Both the obverse and reverse are classified as EDS, with die markers consisting of a die dot under the W of WE on the obverse and a die dot in the stylobate under bay 10 on the reverse. The stylobate is the flat platform upon which the Memorial columns stand, and "bay 10" refers to the tenth inter-column space counted from the left — a precise architectural reference used by trail die researchers. Die dots in EDS are noteworthy because they represent imperfections present from the very beginning of the die's production life, likely originating during manufacturing or hubbing rather than from striking wear. The early die state classification makes this one of the scarcer trail die entries for 1993.
