Description

Discovered by Stephen Young, MDC-1c-1993-04 on the 1993 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent combines radical MAD die clash marks with multiple die chip diagnostics that help pinpoint the specific die pair involved. The primary clash evidence consists of radical MAD clash marks extending east from the bottom of Lincoln's beard on the obverse and additional marks at the rim above the O of OF on the reverse — directional language that maps the transferred impressions relative to the coin's design landmarks. Alongside the clash damage, this die pair exhibits several die chips: one positioned west of the bottom of the 3 in the date, a small chip above the upright of the B in LIBERTY, and multiple chips within the lower portion of the E in CENT on the reverse. These die chips serve a dual purpose for the collector. First, they function as die markers — unique identifiers that distinguish this particular die from every other 1993 Philadelphia obverse and reverse die used during the year. Second, their presence alongside clash marks establishes the die's condition at the time the clash occurred, suggesting a die that had already accumulated significant wear and damage before the clash event. Dies in late states with pre-existing chips and cracks are statistically more prone to clashing incidents because their overall structural integrity has been compromised, making mechanical misalignment during press operation more likely to produce contact between the die faces.
