1993 Atypical Die Clash ADC-1C-1993-01
Error
Description
Documented by MadDieClashes, this 1993 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial Cent displays an exceptionally strong atypical die clash on both obverse and reverse — an error that occurs when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, but at an unusual angle or position that transfers design elements in unexpected locations. Unlike a typical die clash where the dies meet in normal alignment, an atypical clash produces transferred design details in areas where they would not ordinarily appear, creating dramatic and often visually striking ghost images. Very strong unabraded clash marks appear across this specimen, meaning the Mint did not grind down the transferred impressions as standard practice would dictate. Multiple bays of design transfer are visible on both sides of Lincoln's portrait on the obverse, with the U of UNUM from the reverse legend visible on Lincoln's coat. The reverse shows transferred obverse design elements including the profile, ear, eye, nose, and bow tie details from Lincoln's portrait — a remarkably complete transfer that indicates significant striking force during the clash event. Coin courtesy of Louis Schaeffer. The survival of unabraded clash marks across multiple design areas makes this a particularly well-preserved example of atypical die clash mechanics.
