Description

Both dies in the 017T pairing reached the terminal end of their service lives, documented at Stage D in a Very Late Die State (VLDS) on both the obverse and reverse — a symmetrical deterioration condition that indicates neither die was replaced while the other continued in service. Found by Bill Slaughter of Arkansas, the obverse shows a small die gouge in Lincoln's left jacket lapel, while the reverse carries die damage over the first T in STATES. When both dies in a pair reach VLDS simultaneously, it suggests they were installed at roughly the same time and experienced comparable wear rates, retiring together rather than one outlasting the other. This is not always the case — die pairs frequently have mismatched die states because the obverse and reverse dies are manufactured independently and may be installed at different points in their respective lifespans. The VLDS-on-VLDS condition of 017T means that coins struck from this pair near the end of its run would show deterioration features on both sides: flow lines, die cracks, loss of fine detail, and the accumulated gouges and chips that mark a die approaching failure. The lapel gouge on the obverse and the damage over the T in STATES mark a die pair in its final production phase. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets, 2.5 grams, 19mm, plain edge.
