1992-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
Error
Description
Documented with both doubling details and diagnostic die markers, WDDR-001 of the 1992-D Lincoln Memorial cent displays notching on the lower letters of ONE CENT and extra thickness on the designer's initials FG — Frank Gasparro's mark below the right side of the Memorial. The notching on ONE CENT manifests as small step-like displacements along the bottoms of the letters, where the secondary hubbing impression slightly shifted the letter positions before the die was hardened, creating a serrated or notched appearance along the lower edges. Beyond the doubling, two diagnostic gouges help confirm attribution: one gouge sits near the vest area to the left of the D mint mark on the obverse, while a second gouge appears between the Lincoln Memorial and the O in ONE on the reverse. These gouges — incidental die surface damage unrelated to the hubbing error itself — serve as fingerprints that identify this specific die among the doubled die reverses cataloged for the 1992-D date. The combination of letter notching, initial thickening, and positionally specific gouges provides attributors with multiple confirmation points. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets composed of 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper, weighing 2.5 grams and measuring 19mm.
