1992D-1DER-015T Trail Die Reverse
Error
Description
Die damage above the right corner of the cornice positions 1992D-1DER-015T's reverse marker in an area of the Lincoln Memorial design that relatively few die varieties share — the cornice, the horizontal molding that crowns the Memorial's colonnade, occupies a narrow band of design real estate where incidental damage is less commonly documented than in the more frequently referenced letter and column areas. Found by Bill Slaughter of Arkansas at Stage C in a Late Die State (LDS), the obverse carries two die dots around the R of LIBERTY, adding a second positional anchor on the opposite face. The cornice sits between the roof above and the column capitals below, spanning the full width of the Memorial building on the reverse die. Damage in this zone — whether a gouge, scratch, or die chip — is relatively easy to locate under magnification because the cornice is a clean horizontal line where any disruption stands out against the uniform surface. For trail die attributors working through the eighteen 1992-D varieties, checking the cornice area for the telltale damage above the right corner provides a quick screening step that can confirm or rule out 015T without exhaustive comparison of trail patterns. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets, 2.5 grams, 19mm, plain edge.
