Description

Die markers serve as the attributor's fingerprint system, and on 1992D-1DER-012T they provide the primary confirmation pathway for a variety whose trail features alone might not definitively distinguish it from neighboring entries in the eighteen-variety 1992-D census. Found by Bill Slaughter of Arkansas and documented at Stage B in a Mid Die State (MDS), the obverse carries a die gouge to the left of the first digit (1) in the date — a positionally specific marker that immediately narrows identification, since few other 1992-D trail dies share a gouge in this exact location. On the reverse, a small die gouge sits above the E in UNITED, providing a second confirmation point on the opposite die. When a trail die searcher locates a 1992-D cent with suspect trail features on the reverse, checking these two marker positions — left of the date's leading digit on the obverse, above the E of UNITED on the reverse — can quickly confirm or eliminate 012T as the candidate variety without requiring the more time-consuming process of analyzing the trail pattern itself in detail. This marker-first attribution approach is especially practical for the 1992-D date, where eighteen trail die varieties create a large field of potential matches. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets, 2.5 grams, 19mm, plain edge.

Die Markers

  • Stage “B “, obverse is MDS – a die gouge is seen just to the left of the 1 digit in the date.
  • Reverse is MDS – a small die gouge is seen over the E in UNITED.
