1992D-1DER-009WST Trail Die Reverse
Error
Description
Breaking from the pattern established by Bill Slaughter's thirteen discoveries, 1992D-1DER-009WST was found and photographed by Bob Piazza of Florida — bringing a second attributor's eye to the 1992-D trail die census. What makes this variety particularly unusual is the location of its fluting line extension: under the right-side columns ten, eleven, and twelve, oriented in a southwest direction at a 190-degree offset. In most WS-type trail dies, fluting appears beneath the left-side columns where the displacement vector first contacts the columned section of the Memorial, making right-side fluting a diagnostic anomaly that immediately distinguishes this die from the majority of the census. The variety also carries trail features on the letters TED of UNITED, the A of STATES, and the E of EPU on the upper legend, plus ON of ONE and ENT of CENT on the lower denomination text. Documented at Stage A in an Early Die State (EDS) — an unusually early stage for a trail die variety, since most are found on dies that have accumulated moderate to heavy wear — the early die state suggests the trail-producing displacement event occurred very early in this die's service life rather than as a consequence of prolonged use. The EDS classification makes 009WST one of the freshest-state trail dies in the 1992-D catalog. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets, 2.5 grams, 19mm, plain edge. DIE MARKERS : Stage “A”, obverse is EDS – die gouge under the R of TRUST. Reverse is EDS – die scratch from the D of UNITED to the E of EPU. Die scratches in bay 6. A small vertical die gouge is seen in the cornice, above column 6.
