Description

Among the most extensively analyzed trail die reverses in the entire Lincoln Memorial cent series, 1992D-1DER-008WST presents dual-direction displacement at 330 degrees and 150 degrees — vectors that are directly opposite each other along the same axis, suggesting a mechanical "snap back action" where the die shifted in one direction and then returned along the reciprocal path. This snap-back interpretation offers a plausible mechanical explanation: during an anomalous press cycle, the die shifted northwest (330 degrees), depositing displaced design material in that direction, then snapped back southeast (150 degrees) as the press mechanics restored normal alignment, depositing a second set of displaced features along the return path. The result is a die carrying two superimposed trail patterns running in opposite directions. Letter-by-letter analysis reveals how dual displacement plays out across the reverse legend: trail lines from the upper portions of letters in UNITED extend to the northwest, the left side of serifs on STATES shows 330-degree displacement, EPU carries faint northwesterly trails, tops of the letters in AMERICA display southeasterly (150-degree) extension, and CENT shows trail lines consistent with the 150-degree return vector. Found by Bill Slaughter of Arkansas and documented at Stage B in a Mid Die State (MDS), the obverse carries a die dot above the E of LIBERTY and a small gouge to the left of the date, while no notable reverse markers were recorded beyond the trail features themselves. The WST designation confirms that wavy steps and step deviation accompany the trails, adding structural displacement phenomena to the already complex directional pattern. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets, 2.5 grams, 19mm, plain edge. A small die gouge is seen to the left of the DATE.
