Description

Trail lines propagating across the reverse legend define 1992D-1DER-004T, where the T suffix denotes a tilted-trails variety with its offset oriented at 270 degrees — due west. Short, moderate trail lines extend from the tops of the letters in UNITED, and the displaced design energy carries over into the word STATES, where the letters S-T-A-T-E show indications of design extension — faint ghost images stretching westward from their primary positions. Fainter trail lines also appear on the left-side letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM. This westward propagation across the upper reverse legend demonstrates how trail die displacement radiates through the die's design elements: the hub's secondary contact deposits displaced design material that spreads outward from each letter's high point in the direction of the offset, with intensity diminishing as the displacement energy dissipates across the die surface. Found by Bill Slaughter of Arkansas at Stage B in a Mid Die State (MDS), the obverse shows a die gouge under Lincoln's chin, while the reverse carries a small die dot in the letter M of UNUM. The letter-by-letter progression from UNITED through STATES to EPU maps the displacement vector across the full width of the legend. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets, 2.5 grams, 19mm, plain edge.
